Hi friends!

As some of you may know, I am running the New York Marathon this year for Team Kidney, honoring my Mom, Lynley Manke, and raising money for all things kidney! Any amount is appreciated!

I chose to support the National Kidney Foundation because their mission is deeply personal to me; they fund vital research, support patients and families, and advocate for those living with kidney disease, like my Auntie Lynley. Lynley, who my family called “Auntie Lynley,” was diagnosed with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (PKD for short) during a checkup ultrasound for her first pregnancy. PKD is all-consuming: from the daily ups and downs to getting on the transplant list to dialysis; simply put, life is just harder and there is no known cure.

In June of 2016 in Chicago, after years of Lynley waiting on the transplant list—enduring consternation, pain, discomfort, and frustration—my Mom discovered that she was a miracle match. She donated one of her kidneys to her best friend and my Aunt Lynley.

One of Lynley's main goals in being a transplant recipient was powerful in its simplicity: she wanted to raise her kids, Kyra and Erik, and watch them graduate from high school. Lynley was a force to be reckoned with. She was worldly wise, loved Indian food, and was passionate about supporting those around her. Lynley faced PKD with remarkable strength even as her health continued to decline several years after her transplant. On December 19th, 2023, Lynley passed away due to complications of PKD, but her spirit lives on in her husband Chris and two kids, Kyra and Erik.

To be honest, it’s been hard to find the right words for this email. Writing about Lynley and my Mom’s friendship brings up a lot of emotions. I naturally feel some sadness, but honestly, mostly gratitude and admiration. I wanted to do justice to the respect, love, and compassion I’ve witnessed my Mom show Lynley through every high and low. She has been truly selfless, giving her time, love, and even a piece of herself.

Lynley’s life and my Mom’s donation are profound reminders of living with selflessness, courage, and love. I have seen the profound impact that kidney donation can have on an individual and their family. Team Kidney, as part of the National Kidney Foundation, mobilizes individuals and groups to fundraise, advocate, and build community for all kidney diseases, including autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Team Kidney supports ADPKD by raising funds and awareness, and providing resources for patients and research. I have a goal of raising $3,000 for Team Kidney. I appreciate any and all contributions!

Thanks for reading and for considering donating to Team Kidney!
